New
Hampshire Motor Speedway installed SAFER (Steel and Foam Energy
Reduction system) barriers in 2004. |
Widely
known for
its 1 mile oval, on which several well-publicized NASCAR events
are held each year, NHMS also features a tight, challenging 1.6
mile multi-configuration road course. This course combines some
of the oval's wide banked surface with narrower sections including
tight esses, two relatively fast sweepers, several dramatic changes
in elevation, and a steeply banked, down-and-up hairpin turn called
"the bowl". At NHIS, you never stop turning!
NHMS's packed
schedule includes a NASCAR Winston Cup race, two NASCAR Busch Grand
National North races, several SCCA and vintage events, frequent
club events hosted by organizations like COMSCC, Northeast Replica
Challenge, and BMW Car Club of America, and numerous motorcycle
and kart races.
The
two Nextel Cup Series races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway are
largest spectator sporting events in New England with 101,000 guests
in attendance at each race. NHMS is located one hour from Boston,
two hours from Portland, Maine, and Providence, R.I., and is easily
accessible from Vermont and Canada..
NHMS also holds
several open track sessions throughout the year, typically using
the North Chicane/South Oval configuration.
Helpful
Hints
- There
are two well-stocked fuel/convenience stores about 1 mile south
of the track on Route 106.
- Make
sure your brakes and brake lines are in good shape - Turn 3 is
utterly unforgiving of brake failure.
- Racing
gas & Methanol are available. Call the track for flavors and
prices.
- There
are used oil and antifreeze collection tanks in the paddock.
- There
is an air conditioned restaurant, (The Checkered Flag), which
serves all sorts of usual track food.
- The
bathrooms are very clean. The showers are hot and there are plenty
of them.

Vintage Celebration ("Vic Yerardi Memorial") is the
largest on track vintage racing car event in the US. Eligible vintage
racing cars include: Midgets, Sprints, Champ cars, Indy cars and
Stock cars. The event was the brainchild of Bob Bahre, New Hampshire
Motor Speedway owner, and the late Vic Yerardi, a huge supporter
of the Vintage Race Car movement.
Cars
travel from as far away as California and Florida to participate
in the event. Each year a Grand Marshall is named for the celebration.
In past years, notables like Roger Ward, A.J. Watson, Buster Werke,
Ron Bouchard & Ken Squier were honored.
Curious
what an offenhauser sounds like at speed? Curious what 5-10 offenhausers
at speed sound like? Curious what a Champ car sounds like at speed?
Come out and experience with us what has been one of the best kept
secrets. Expect to be impressed by the facility, by the people and
by the RACING CARS!
